Alibaba: the international front door
Alibaba.com lists millions of suppliers who want to sell abroad. Sellers speak English, accept international payments and understand export paperwork. That convenience is real, and it is reflected in the price.
Many listings belong to trading companies, and a 'Gold Supplier' or 'Verified' badge confirms that a company exists and paid for a service, not that its products will meet your standard.
1688: the domestic market
1688.com is where Chinese businesses buy from each other. Prices are often lower and the range is enormous, but everything is in Chinese, payment needs a Chinese account, and many sellers do not export or handle international shipping.
1688 is excellent for checking real market prices and finding the source of a product you saw on Alibaba. It is risky for buyers who cannot read contracts or visit suppliers.
When a sourcing agent makes sense
An agent is useful when you need custom specifications, several factories, inspections and one person accountable for the result. A good agent negotiates in Chinese, verifies factories, follows production and stops problems before they ship.
Ask any agent how they are paid. A transparent service fee keeps the agent on your side; hidden commissions from factories can push it the other way.
- You want a custom product or your own branding.
- Your order involves more than one factory.
- You cannot visit China or read Chinese contracts.
- You need inspections and someone accountable for quality.
A simple way to decide
For a small test order of a standard product, Alibaba can be enough. For price research, 1688 is the best map of the market. For anything custom, branded, or larger than a test, an agent with a team on the ground usually pays for itself the first time a problem is caught at the factory instead of at your warehouse.
What each channel costs you in time
Price is only one part of the cost. Buying on Alibaba means sorting through many similar listings and replies. Buying on 1688 means working in Chinese, finding a way to pay and arranging export yourself. Working with an agent means paying a fee, but handing over most of that work.
A useful exercise is to estimate the hours you will spend per order and give them a value. For many small brands, time is the scarcest resource.
Mixing channels is normal
Many experienced importers use all three: 1688 to understand real market prices, Alibaba to find suppliers that already export, and an agent to verify, negotiate and inspect the orders that matter most. The channel is a tool, not a loyalty.
